A MESSAGE FROM DEACON MICHAEL ...

During these next few days, Archbishop Peter will be leading over 130 pilgrims from the Diocese on Pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Shrine at Lourdes. The theme this year is With Bernadette we Pray the Our Father. Bernadette’s whole live was spent in the service of her Lord, she responded to the promptings of the Lord's prayer, especially the words: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done”.

We come to Lourdes in response to an invitation, the invitation of Our Blessed Lady to come here in procession, to give praise to God our Father, to meet him in the Eucharist, to make known his Kingdom here. And as a Diocese we are called to do this in our parishes, in our schools, in all the places we may find ourselves. Mary invites us to come to Lourdes to pray "Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done". Mary, who responded to Our Lord's call, invites us to respond to his call - she points us to him.

I invite you to join us in spirit during this week. Please browse through this Lourdes 2011 section of our site - you may wish, for instance, to meditate on the Stations of the Cross ... to reflect on the theme of the Pilgrimage, but I invite you also to pray with us each day for the Diocesan Prayer Intention.

We go to Lourdes to pray as a family, as a diocesan family, and to pray for that family. Join with us by uniting your prayers to our prayers this week

Archbishop Peter, Bishop Paul and Bishop Howard, and the priests, deacons and all Southwark pilgrims remember you in prayer at this Shrine of Our Lady.

With every good wish and blessing,

Friday, 19th August 2011

Deacon Michael Kennedy
Diocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage Director

Welcome to the Lourdes 2011 web pages.

Plans are well advanced for our Southwark Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes from 19th until 26th August 2011. We are delighted that Archbishop Peter will be leading our pilgrimage and he warmly invites you to join him. We hope that every parish in the diocese will be represented to gather in prayer with our Archbishop at the Shrine of Our Lady and to receive the graces and blessings that she gives us at this holy place.

We will be travelling again with The Catholic Association which has organised pilgrimages to Lourdes for over a hundred years. While preserving our diocesan identity, we shall, therefore, be part of a larger group and have the opportunity to meet people from other dioceses, schools, and organisations throughout the country.

Every year, our Youth Team - young men and women aged 17-25 - are invaluable in caring for our sick and disabled pilgrims. In 2011, our pilgrimage coincides with World Youth Day in Madrid which a large contingent from the diocese will be attending. So we are in special need of young people to join us on pilgrimage this year. Perhaps you know of a young person who would value this experience ... you may even be willing to help by contbibuting to the cost?

I hope that you will be able to join us. You know that you will be most welcome. Our Lourdes Pilgrimage is a grace not only for those who join us, but also for the whole diocese.

More pages will be added to this site as information becomes availabe, so please return here. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

With every good wish and blessing,

8th December 2010
