Diocesan Day for Catechists

On Saturday 28th June 2014, over 160 catechists from dozens of parishes gathered for the third annual diocesan day for catechists. This day, organised by the Centre for Catholic Formation, was held at St George’s Cathedral and sought to encourage and support those who provide sacramental preparation, adult formation and children’s liturgy in the Archdiocese of Southwark. It was also a perfect opportunity for the diocese to thank the hundreds who give their time, energy and talents to catechizing and passing on the faith to both children and adults.

Annual Diocesan Youth Festival

Saturday 21st June 2014 was the day of our Annual Diocesan Youth Festival which takes place at Aylesford Priory.

It was a glorious day shared with young people from across the diocese.
We explored the theme 'Blessed are the Poor in Spirit' which was given to young people by Pope Francis as the World Youth Day 2014 theme.
We had an input session from CAFOD which looked at the World Cup and in impact it is having in Brazil then the young people split themselves into smaller groups for creative workshops like Art, Drama and Music, sports workshops and more.

We were joined by Fr Paul Mason for a lovely BBQ and Mass in the Relic Chapel.

A big thank you to all those to attended and took part, and we look forward to seeing you all at the next one on the 20th June 2015!

In his homily Bishop Paul invited all Christians everywhere to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them and not be concerned by our divisions.

Children who had recently received their first Holy Communion, young people who had recently been Confirmed and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion were given special places in the procession.

Lesnes Abbey is situated in the parish of St Benet, Abbey Wood. The abbey was founded in 1178 by Richard de Lucy, who, in 1170, had been complicit with Henry II in the murder of St Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury. He built the abbey within the boundaries of his Manor in reparation and, having assumed the religious habit, ended his days there and was buried in the Chapter House.

The abbey was a foundation of the Augustinian Canons within the Diocese of Rochester. It was closed in 1524 by Cardinal Wolsey to raise revenue to found a college in Oxford, but at Wolsey's fall in 1530 the site became the property of the King.
