2014, over 160 catechists from dozens of parishes gathered for the
third annual diocesan day for catechists. This day, organised by the
Centre for Catholic Formation, was held at St George’s Cathedral and
sought to encourage and support those who provide sacramental
preparation, adult formation and children’s liturgy in the Archdiocese
of Southwark. It was also a perfect opportunity for the diocese to
thank the hundreds who give their time, energy and talents to
catechizing and passing on the faith to both children and adults.
The keynote talk, this year, was delivered by Rev
Dr Adrian Graffy, the
director of the Commission for Evangelization and Formation in
Brentwood, on the theme of St Paul’s Letter to the Romans.
Both the CCF book stall and the CTS book stalls
were available plus
details of the courses and events being held
Canon John O'Toole conducted a tour of the Catheral.
Participants then took part in two from a list of
ten workshops which
included: First Holy Communion programmes, Engaging with Scripture for
Children's Liturgy, What is Confirmation?, Preparing parents and adults
for Baptism, RCIA-the period of post Baptismal Catechesis, the
vocation of the Catechist, Setting up faith sharing groups in your
parish, Reaching out to non-churchgoing Catholics, Eight key elements
of authentic catechesis and Using Evangellum and why.
Feedback was very
positive on these workshops and plans are already afoot for next year.
The day ended with the Vigil Mass for Saints Peter
and Paul in which
our episcopal vicar for Kent, Fr Paul Mason, sent out the catechists to
their parishes and chaplaincies, on behalf of Archbishop Peter, to
communicate our shared faith.
If you wish to learn more about your faith; have
been asked or wish to
become a catechist you may like to attend one of the courses for new
catechists due to take place in the autumn.

Lesnes Abbey is situated in the parish of St Benet, Abbey Wood. The
abbey was founded in 1178 by Richard de Lucy, who, in 1170, had been
complicit with Henry II in the murder of St Thomas Becket, the
Archbishop of Canterbury. He built the abbey within the boundaries of
his Manor in reparation and, having assumed the religious habit, ended
his days there and was buried in the Chapter House.
The abbey was a foundation of the Augustinian Canons within the Diocese
of Rochester. It was closed in 1524 by Cardinal Wolsey to raise revenue
to found a college in Oxford, but at Wolsey's fall in 1530 the site
became the property of the King.
