Archbishop Peter Smith and CAFOD Director Chris Bain have presented a livesimply award to St James the Great Parish in Petts Wood in recognition of their commitment to live more simply and sustainably and to stand in solidarity with people living in poverty around the world.  The Parish is the first parish in the Diocese of Southwark and the thirteenth in England and Wales to achieve the national award.

Archbishop Peter Smith said: “Well done to St James’. Southwark is one of the few dioceses that has got the award for living simply and I think it shows what they’re doing – what Pope Francis is asking us all to do: to care especially for the disadvantaged and those living in poverty.”

To achieve the award parishioners created a beautiful and tranquil wildlife garden and worship space, which Archbishop Peter blessed and they reduced the carbon footprint of the church by nearly 10 per cent by switching electricity supplies to a renewable energy supplier and encouraging ‘leave the car at home’ weekends.

The parishioners have also been marking baptisms and birthdays by planting more than 70 trees in British woodlands and supporting the local food bank, whilst raising £1,200 so far to support CAFOD’s work with those living in poverty in Bangladesh.

Good News for St George's Cathedral

Culture Secretary Sajid Javid has announced, that cathedrals across England will receive almost £5million for urgent repairs in the first round of grants from the First World War Centenary Cathedral repair fund. The fund was announced in Budget 2014 and set up in April this year in recognition of the powerful symbol our cathedrals are of Britain’s shared history as well as the significant role they will play when the nation comes together to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

The Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St George has been awarded a government grant and it will be used to replace the 35-year old boilers (with only four of the twelve still working) and to renew the unreliable electrics at St George’s. This will be a great help to keep the Cathedral safe and secure, as well as warm and welcoming, for all who come to visit  as worshippers or as tourists.

130615 - Mass in Celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony

A Mass to mark the anniversary of the start of the First World War will be celebrated at St George’s on Sunday 3rd August 2014 at 11.30am. On Sunday 5 October 2014 a Mass will be celebrated for those who had family members who were killed and injured in World War 1. On Tuesday 11 November 2014 at 10.30am there will be a Service of Remembrance and prayers for peace for young people from our local schools in Southwark and Lambeth – followed by a football tournament in the grounds of the Imperial War Museum to recall the cessation of hostilities between opposing sides during the first Christmas of the war.

These are the first government grants to be given to Roman Catholic Cathedrals for over five years and much gratitude is given to the government for such practical help and support in maintaining our Cathedral so that it may continue its mission of worship, welcome and witness which it has been living out since it opened, 166 years ago, in 1848.
