Golden Anniversay Mass - Addiscombe

On Sunday 7th December the parish of Addiscombe welcomed Archbishop Peter and thank him for joining them as they celebrated the past fifty years.
141207 - Golden Anniversary - Addiscombe
Many of the people present processed from the old church to the new on 8th December 1964. Many worked hard to get together the money for the new church. A strong community had been formed since the first church opened on 11th October 1925. Fr. James Barraud was appointed Priest in Charge in 1939 and lived at 393 Lower Addiscombe Road. He obviously ‘prepared the way’, like John the Baptist, for Fr. John McKenna, who was appointed Priest in Charge on 1st December 1944 and became the first Parish Priest on 8th December 1964, when Addiscombe became a parish. He worked tirelessly to build up the parish and the Kingdom of God in Addiscombe until his death in 1978.
Thanks was also given to the other priests who served the community, the Religious Sisters and of course, to the parishnors for their commitment to the faith and to the parish.

After four years of preparation, a superb programme of activities to celebrate the Golden Jubilee was held
The key highlights included:
- The fundraising jamboree for the Anerley ACROSS, a charity which takes disabled young people to Lourdes on an annual pilgrimage, raised in excess of £4,000.00.
- The performances by the infants & junior choirs from St Thomas Becket School as well as the stained glass window & artwork made by the pupils at the school
- The entertainment provided by the Youth Group trio - The banner that was made by the youth of the parish is now on display at the front of the church
- The refreshments and buffets that were provided during the celebrations

All members of the fundraising committee were also thanked for their magnificent support over the last four years. The committee has facilitated a significant number of events during this period which have strengthened the community as well as raise considerable resources to support the refurbishment & redecoration programmes.
