Blue Plaque for the Aylesford Pottery

On Friday 20th February, a Blue Plaque was unveiled in memory of David Leach OBE, the famous international potter, who founded the Aylesford pottery in 1954 at the Friars.

The plaque was unveiled by John Leach, one of David’s sons. In his speech John mentioned that he had began his craft at Aylesford and worked alongside Bro. Michael. John Leach recalled that one day Fr. Machaly, the first Prior of Aylesford, asked him to make only “holy pots”. He was taught by his grandfather, Bernard Leach, and his father, David Leach, that every pot should be made with integrity and for him they became holy. A potter must work with passion. As you can see with some of the great artist who worked here in the shrine.

The ceremony was attended by our local MP, the leader of Kent County Council and the leader of Tonbridge and Malling Council.

This is only the eighth blue plaque to be unveiled by Tonbridge and Malling Council and the first outside of Tonbridge.
