Jubilarians at the Venerable English College in Rome
24th November 2016 two Southwark jubilarians were able to attend the
annual celebratory meal hosted by the Venerable English College in

The Southwark Catholic
Youth Service held their Annual General Meeting for 2015 on Tuesday
22nd November 2016 in Archbishop's House
John Toryusen, Director of the Southwark Catholic Youth Service started
his report with a brief snapshot of the work of the SCYS in the form of
a short film.
After the Director's report and the election of officers for the
Management Committee John presented Janet Dorey with a farewell card
and gift as he expressed the gratitude of the whole committee to Janet
for her many years of hard work and commitment as secretary to the

Confirmation in Buckland
On Sunday 20th November
2016 Archbishop conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 13 young
people and 11 adults in Our Lady of Dover, Buckland
Conclusion of the Jubilee of Mercy
On Sunday 20th November Pope Francis
Mass on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square as part of the conclusion of the
Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, and began the liturgy by closing
Door in St. Peter’s Basilica.
In his homily, Pope Francis said,
“Even if the Holy Door
closes, the true door of mercy which is the heart of Christ always
wide for us.”
Following the conclusion of the Mass,
the Holy Father signed the Apostolic Letter Misecordia
et misera, addressed to the whole Church, as his concluding
reflection on the Year of Mercy.
previous Sunday, 13th November, the Door of Mercy at St George's
Cathedral was closed for the last time, along with the other Doors of
Mercy outside of Rome, in line with the instructions of the Holy See
for the Jubilee. Over the course of the Jubilee the Cathedral and
the Shrines at Aylesford, Faversham and Ramsgate, welcomed
though the Doors of Mercy. People came individually, in small groups,
in parish groups, in Deanery groups and groups from organisations; all
responding to the invite of God the Merciful Father, to travel and
pray. Truly a time of blessing for all the pilgrims and through them
for the whole diocese.
60th Anniversary of Parish Scout Group – Orpington
Archbishop Peter joined the
community of Holy Innocents - Orpington to celebrate 60th years of the
Scouts being in the Parish on 19th November 2016

Knights of St Columba
Saturday 12th November 2016 Bishop Paul Mason celebrated Mass for the
deceased brothers of Province 12 Southwark at Bostal Park.
was Father John O'Donoghue, chaplain to Province 12 and Father Innocent

Paul was presented with a Knights of St Columba honoury member's
certificate by Deputy Supreme Knight - Brother Joe Rodriguez and
Michael Akinrele-Provincial Grand Knight, Province 12 Southwark.
Anniversary of the Dedication of
Metropolitan Cathedral Church of St George
Although St. George’s Cathedral opened in 1848 it was not dedicated
until 7th November 1894 when all of the building debts had been repaid
The dedication is commemorated every year throughout the diocese as a
Feast and at the cathedral a Solemnity.
This year Canon John Weatherill presided at Mass attended by some of
the Canons of the diocese and parishioners of St George’s Cathedral.
During the Mass three new Chapter Canons were installed by Provost
Peter Stodart. They are: Canon Brian Coyle, Rector of St. John’s
Seminary; Canon Richard Hearn, Dean of the Cathedral; and Canon Alan
McLean, parish priest of Bermondsey Dockhead
School Governors Conference
Archbishop Peter joined the
Conference of School Governors in the Archdiocese of Southwark in Amigo
Hall on Saturday 5th November 2016

Schools Commissioner for South East and South London gave a presentation
