The Augustine Camino is a stunning walking route between Rochester Cathedral and St Augustine’s RC Shrine in Ramsgate in Kent. The next guided pilgrimage will take place between Saturday 23rd April – Friday 29th April 2022., during which time those participating will average ten miles of walking each day.
This pilgrimage is a chance to experience Southwark's very own Camino, winding through beautiful local Kent countryside, visiting many extraordinary religious sites, including Canterbury Cathedral and Aylesford Priory, and celebrating the mission of St Augustine to convert the English in 597 AD.
St Augustine's Shrine is the destination of the pilgrimage, and is known as the 'ideal church' of master architect Augustus Welby Pugin, designer of Big Ben, who also helped to create the original St George's Cathedral (prior to bombing in WW2) innumerable churches of all sizes and was the leader of the Gothic Revival.
Taking part in the Camino
Pilgrimage participants will gather 8 a.m. outside St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, before walking to London Bridge for the train to Rochester. Those who wish can join the pilgrimage outside Rochester Cathedral at 10.45 a.m.
The pilgrimage will be led by Augustine Camino founder, Andrew Kelly. Andrew will be introducing the many beautiful historical, artistic and architectural works along the route, which will encompass three cathedrals, five separate shrines, including one to each of our diocesan patrons, and many beautiful medieval churches.
Accommodation will be at Aylesford Priory and small hotels and guest houses en route. The cost is £50 per person per day, which will include the guided tour, booking and baggage transfers. Participants should budget an additional £40 per night for shared accommodation plus meals (pack lunches or pubs/restaurants as you wish).
