Gaudete Sunday Video Message from Archbishop Wilson

Archbishop John Wilson has recorded a short video for Gaudete Sunday. The day takes its name from the Latin word Gaudete ('Rejoice'), the first word of the introit of the Mass:

'Gaudete in Domino semper; iterum dico, gaudete.'

'Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say, rejoice.'

- Philippians 4.4

Gaudete Sunday takes place on the third week in Advent, and may be compared to Laetare Sunday in Lent.  Both Advent and Lent are penitential seasons, and both Gaudete and Laetare Sunday are special days that offer a moment of respite in which we are encouraged to look forward with joy.

In the case of Gaudete Sunday we anticipate the imminent arrival of the child Jesus, and the hope his birth will bring to all mankind: we celebrate because the Lord is near.

Today, Churches will bear rose coloured vestments and the rose-coloured candle on the Advent Wreath will be lit, whilst we hear in the readings of joy and happiness, alongside the important continuing mission of St John the Baptist.

Archbishop John Wilson has recorded a short video message for Gaudete Sunday, in which he shares the need for everyone to have joy and hope in the Lord Jesus.
