VACANCY: Priests' Welfare Officer

The Archdiocese of Southwark is looking to appoint 2 part-time Priests’ Welfare Officers to join our small team. The roles are responsible for overseeing the health and social welfare of all sick and retired priests within the Diocese.


JOB TITLE:                  Priests’ Welfare Officer

REPORTS TO:             Vicar General (VG)

RESPONSIBLE FOR:  The health and social welfare of all sick and retired / sick priests                                               within the Diocese.

LOCATIONS:               One role each for South East London, South West London and                                                 Kent.  These are approximate geographic areas and there may be                                             some overlap.  Cases will also be allocated in a way that is fair,                                                 but each job holder will be expected to provide some cover to                                                   their colleagues in the other areas as necessary.

Each Officer will be responsible for a geographic area and will ensure that retired and sick priests receive individual holistic health care and social support to maximise their wellbeing, through understanding their needs, overseeing the services / support provided for them and recommending changes to their care arrangements as necessary.  The job holder is expected to develop excellent working relationships will all relevant priests within their area as well as service providers, senior clergy and other senior management within the Diocese.

The ideal candidate will have a full understanding of the Catholic religion and the role of priests, including empathy with their spiritual and pastoral needs; a care or nursing background; be fully conversant with accessing care and medical services; an in depth understanding of safeguarding issues in this context and be an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing.  Good IT skills are also essential as all records are kept electronically. If we appoint a qualified nurse, we will ensure that they can maintain their PIN if they wish to do so and facilitate the necessary study days to keep their knowledge up-to-date.  Please note that this job will not enable the nurse to maintain their clinical skills within the remit of the job.

The jobs are home based and travelling within the Diocese is required.  We ideally want 2 people working 2 days per week (14 hours) each.

Salary (based on 14 hours) is £12,800 - £14,000 per annum depending upon skills and experience.
